East Street Alternative School
Referral Guidelines
One of the primary goals of the short-term program is to serve as a deterrent to continued student misconduct at the base school. Consequently, East Street School should be used as an early intervention. The referral procedure for REGULAR EDUCATION students in the short-term program is as follows:
1. The first suspendable offense shall result in 1st Out-of-School suspension.
2. The second suspendable offense shall result in a minimum three day assignment to East Street.
3. The third suspendable offense shall result in a minimum five day assignment to East Street.
4. The fourth suspendable offense shall result in a 2nd Out-of-School suspension.
5. The fifth suspendable offense shall result in a 3rd Out-of-School suspension.
6. The sixth suspendable offense may result in a ten day assignment to East Street at the discretion of the base school principal, or Recommendation for Expulsion.
In summary, a REGULAR EDUCATION student will only be allowed a minimum of three referrals to East Street in a particular school year.

The following procedures must be adhered to when a SPECIAL EDUCATION student is assigned to East Street for short-term placement (up to ten days):
1. Every effort must be made to address disruptive behavior by the special education teacher, ASSIST teacher, pupil appraisal personnel, administrator, etc. before placement at East Street.
2. An IEP meeting must be convened to address placement. Only one page must be completed (Placement/Least Restrictive Environment page). The Site Determination must indicate East Street.
3. Special Education students who are assigned to East Street through the IEP need the following:
a) East Street form and placement page of IEP
b) Work assigned for the short-term placement (work should address content standards)
c) Modifications page of IEP so personnel can provide modifications.
4. The school is to send assignments for each day the student attends East Street.
5. Complete Special Education Assignment East Street form.
For long-term placement to East Street, the following must be adhered to:
1. A functional behavioral assessment must be on file.
2. A Behavior Management plan must be on file.
3. An IEP meeting must be convened to change placement to East Street. Cloris Verdin must be involved in the IEP meeting.
4. Complete Special Education Alternative Assignment to East Street.
5. The IEP responsibilities become the responsibility of East Street personnel and the school need not send work.
Special Education students recommended for expulsion should be placed at East Street while awaiting a hearing date. If final resoution contradicts any of those procedures, adjustments will be made to comply.
