Historical Brave Facts

~The names of various things, such as Braves, Reservation, Raindancers, Calumet, Smoke Signals, and Shaman, were selected by students, and the alma mater and coat of arms were established in those early years of the school.

~H. L. Bourgeois High School was not the original name for the school. In fact, H.L.B. was not named North Terrebonne High School only thanks to students from South Terrebonne who voiced their disapproval; they said that it was already confusing having two “Terrebonne” high schools without adding a third. While considering a new name, the name Halfway High School was kicked around because the school site sits on the remains of Halfway Plantation, but that was quickly shot down. Henry Louis Bourgeois, who served as superintendent for some forty years (see student handbook), was selected as a man deserving the honor of having a high school named after him.

~The school’s phone number was set up by South Central Bell to “read” 504-87 BEARS.  The winning vote was thought to be the Bears, but a surprising victory of Braves came out on top.  It was too late to change the school’s phone number as it had already been printed.  To this day, the number remains (with the exception of the new area code change from 504 to 985) the same – 985.872.3277 or 985.87BEARS.

Sidenote* Mrs. Cheramie’s (Librarian 2006 – current) and Mr. Schexnayder’s (Options III teacher) father was the South Central Bell employee who set up the numbers for the school.  Their younger brother, Kirk, was a senior in the first graduating Class of HLB.

~On March 3, 1975, the Heavyweight Champion of the World, Muhammad Ali, visited H. L. Bourgeois. He addressed the student body and answered student questions. Mr. Little is the only teacher here who can still attest to this. Shortly after his visit, Muhammad Ali wrote this poem about H. L. Bourgeois:

          You have a beautiful school

                   And I admire your style,

But your pay is so cheap

                   I won’t be back for a while.

It’s just hard to be humble

When you’re as great as I am.

                                                                                             - Signed Muhammad Ali

~In November 2011, the new Freshmen Academy Building broke ground.  The 9.5 million dollar project is scheduled to be completed by the opening of the 2013-14 school year.  The facility will boast new classrooms, 2 science labs, and 2 computer labs.  All classes will have state-of-the-art technology.  There will also be an inside and outside courtyard for students to gather in during breaks from classes. An additional Administrator and Guidance Counselor will be added to the staff, but the school will still be governed by the Administration of HLB.
