The guidance counselors provide a variety of services to students, parents, and teachers which include counseling, academic and occupational information, orientation, education and work placement. The guidance office is open before school and during the lunch break with a counselor available at all times. In order to talk to a counselor during a class period, a student must obtain a permission slip from the teacher and bring this permit to the guidance office. Each student is assigned to a specific counselor and will be monitored during his/her entire academic career at THS.

Interventions for improving grades

1. Contact your teacher for specific suggestions for improvement and help available.
2. Be in class on time and well-prepared each day. Participate with full attention in class activities.
3. Keep an assignment book or planner to organize short-term and long-term projects. Break large projects into smaller chunks.
4. Block off routine, quiet study time at home.
5. Review notes and texts periodically. Do not wait until the night before a test. Plan ahead for finals.
6. Establish study groups with peers.
7. Review sound test-taking techniques. Ask your teacher how to best study for his/her subject area.
8. Reevaluate your priorities when activities or employment outside of school jeopardize your academic success.
9. Use school resources available to you.

How to get help at school:
   Teachers
      • Talk to your teacher about specific suggestions for improvement.
      • Ask your teacher about help sessions that he/she offers his/her students.
   Peer Tutoring
      • Honor Society, Foreign Language Club, Beta Club, and Key Club offer peer-tutoring to students on Tuesdays, and Thursdays during the second half of lunch.
   School Counselors
      • Contact the Guidance Office for a recommendation of outside tutors.
      • Make an appointment with your school counselor for further recommendations.
   Grade Level Principal
      • Contact your grade level principal to be matched with a faculty mentor.
      • Contact your grade level principal for further assistance.
   Other resources: Library
      • The library contains 15 computers for student use.
      • The Library holds books, videos, and periodicals.
      • The Library is open Monday through Friday from 7:00a.m.-2:20 p.m.

TIPS FOR TALKING TO TEENS ABOUT FACEBOOK  (From Dailygrommet . com)

Facebook is a responsibility

Talk to your kids about controlling their information. Encourage them to be selective about what they post. But it’s not just what they post that can get away from them. Their activities on Facebook, including the applications they use and games they play, can be viewed by others.

Set rules about what’s appropriate to post.  Talk to your children about not posting photos of them doing something that could hurt them in the future. They also need to be thoughtful about their status updates, wall posts, and comments on friends’ posts. Remind them that once they post something, it’s out of their hands.

Encourage teens to self-reflect before they self-reveal. Teens are very much in the moment and are likely to post something they didn’t really mean. Work with them on curbing that impulse. Teach them to ask themselves why they’re posting something, who will be able to read it, and whether it be misunderstood or used against them later.
